"Today I will do what others won’t so tomorrow I can do what others can’t".
Never has a truer word been spoken. The discipline you instill in yourself to achieve what you truly want will take you to a level that others will struggle to aspire to.
In my childhood sayings like, "Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today", were bandied around. It’s a looser version of the same thing. I kind of got the meaning at the time but putting it into the bigger picture gives it a whole new meaning.
Let’s break it down:
"Today I will do what others won’t ..." - Why won’t they? Is it too hard? Do they not know how? Would they rather be watching the latest soap on television or meeting friends for drinks after work? Is it boring? Will other people think they are stupid? Whatever the reason, they have chosen not to do it. It is their choice. You, however, have chosen to use your time wisely and have the discipline to complete and keep completing this task. This is what will take you to greatness.
I have been in sales for over 25 years. In this time I have seen a huge variety of salespeople that I have either interacted with or simply observed in the course of their duties. Those that do well stand out by huge proportions from those that don’t. The discipline of their routines not only gets the work done, it creates a level of professionalism that makes their customers/clients want to work with them. Who do you think gets the recommendation when a special order is needed or when a new job hits the market? The salespeople that are never around after 4 pm, come into store to chat with staff and not much else and never give anything over and above will not get a second thought.
"... so tomorrow I can do what others can’t". This is the key that sets you apart from the rest. You have done the hard yards, put in the time while others were out having fun and now that discipline you have shown will transfer to rewards for you. Others will now look at where you are and wonder why they can’t be in the same place. You can now do what others can’t – it’s just so simple.
Several years ago when I was a sales rep for wine company I was visiting one of my favourite supermarket managers. As I sat down and started to say "John, I’ve got something to tell you..." he interrupted me and said "... I know. You are leaving to work for XYZ Company". As it transpired, John had given me a glowing reference when asked about my work ethic and ability from a Company I had applied to work for. I was also fortunate to be "tapped on the shoulder" for the same reason some years previous when a Company Manager had taken his time to see his key customers and ask who were their best reps that they could recommend. So, the seeds you spend time sowing today will give you crops to reap in the future, while your peers are complaining over coffee about the current draught!
