Creating a Memorable USP

What is a USP and why should we have one?

A USP or Unique Selling Proposition is a short and snappy pitch that tells people what you do, both quickly and in the most memorable way. Think of it as your elevator speech. If you were chatting to someone you didn’t know in an elevator and they asked you what you did, can you answer that, concisely, articulately and memorably in the limited time you are likely to have?

Creating a U.S.P is vitally important for your business as it helps clarify what your business is about. It provides a critical step in focusing your sales targets and if done right can speak volumes about who you are and how you do your business. The key to a great USP is to make it your elevator speech so no more than 20 – 30 words at the most.

Some simple steps to consider when creating your USP:

Is your pitch memorable?

After hearing it will it start a conversation?

Does it identify with your target audience?

Is there a huge benefit to your listener that is going to make them want to do business with you?

Is it appealing to something that your listener needs fixed or help with?

Does it offer benefits to your listener or a big advantage?

Does it ooze personality?

At Make a Difference Marketing our U.S.P is short, sharp and very bold and purposely designed to start a conversation. Our bold statement might shock some people but our target audience should be saying “tell me more”. In business your products and services will never suit everyone so it’s important to be very clear who you are trying to attract.
